Alcest - Écailles de Lune (2010)
Black Metal
France
Alcest's first album Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde, blew my mind and melted my heart with its beauty. It was perfect and I thought Neige was not going to be able to one up that album, but he has done the seemingly impossible in my eyes. Neige is a musical genius and hes proving that more and more with each album he puts out. He's the front man behind Alcest and other bands Mortifera, and Amesoeurs, and it doesnt matter which project he focused on they are all unique and amazing in their own light.
What I love about Alcest is he is not afraid to incorporate other elements into heavy music. Alcest upsets the stomachs of the elite black metallers because Neige incorporates his emotion-filled "lovey dovey" shoegaze elements into a style of music that is supposed to be grim, evil, and misanthropic.
In short, Écailles de Lune has a unique blend of black metal, shoegaze and post-rock which is perfectly executed to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Écailles de Lune has the ability to engulf you in a sound scape of nostalgia, longing, awe, and beauty with its ambiance and harmonies.
If I ever need a break from my day I will spin Alcest's Écailles de Lune because for the briefest of moments, all the anxieties and troubles from my life are lifted from my back and I have nothing left to do but to be in awe of this beautiful masterpiece.
